Convert decimal and binary storage units

The symbols are intentionally distinct: GB means gigabytes and GiB means gibibytes. Likewise, MB and MiB are not equal.
Capacity versus usable space
This is a mathematical unit conversion. It does not account for formatting, filesystems, recovery partitions, reserved storage, compression, metadata, or other overhead.
Data quantities are also different from transfer rates such as Mbps. Converting a file size to download time requires a rate and allowance for real-world overhead.

What is the difference between a gigabyte and a gibibyte?
A decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A binary gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, so one GB is approximately 0.9313 GiB.
How many bits are in one byte?
One byte contains eight bits. This converter therefore treats one bit as one eighth of a byte.
Why can advertised drive capacity look smaller in an operating system?
Storage manufacturers commonly advertise decimal units, while some software reports binary quantities but may label them ambiguously. A 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is 931.32 GiB, so a system that reports binary quantities under a "GB" label shows about 931 for a drive sold as 1,000. Formatting and reserved space reduce usable capacity further.
Does this convert internet speed such as megabits per second?
No. This tool converts data quantities, not transfer rates. A rate also includes a time unit, such as seconds, and may be affected by protocol overhead.
