Estimate flooring material
Enter the length and width of a rectangular floor, your waste allowance, and the square-foot coverage printed on one package. The calculator reports measured area, added waste, total material area, and complete packages.
Formula
Room area equals length multiplied by width. Waste area equals room area multiplied by the waste percentage. Packages equal total area divided by package coverage, rounded up.
Package labels sometimes distinguish nominal coverage from usable coverage. Use the manufacturer’s stated coverage and confirm that all packages are the same product, color lot, and specification.
Planning an installation
Measure alcoves, closets, transitions, and other included spaces. Complex layouts, diagonal installation, patterned material, defects, and future repair stock may justify a different waste allowance. This estimate does not account for underlayment, adhesive, trim, moisture barriers, or subfloor preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Why should flooring include a waste allowance?
Cutting, damaged pieces, pattern alignment, room shape, and future repairs can require material beyond the measured floor area. The appropriate allowance depends on the product and layout.
Why are packages rounded up?
Flooring is normally sold only in complete packages. If the calculated requirement uses part of another package, you must purchase the full package.
Can this calculate an irregular room?
Divide the floor into rectangles, calculate each rectangle, and add their areas. Enter the combined area by choosing dimensions whose product equals that total, or calculate each section separately before purchasing.
Does this include closets, stairs, or flooring under cabinets?
Only areas included in the entered length and width are counted. Measure every surface you intend to cover and follow the flooring manufacturer's installation instructions.
