Estimate gravel volume and weight

The ton result means US short tons. Whole bags are rounded upward, and cost uses the number of whole bags.

Formula

Volume is length multiplied by width multiplied by depth in inches divided by twelve, which gives cubic feet; dividing by twenty-seven gives cubic yards. Weight is volume multiplied by the entered bulk density, and dividing by two thousand gives US short tons. Bags are the weight divided by the weight per bag, rounded up.

Confirm supplier information

The density field starts at 100 pounds per cubic foot. That is a generic figure for dry, loose gravel, which typically runs about 95 to 105 pounds per cubic foot. Crushed stone, washed river rock, and wet material all differ, and density drives the tonnage, the bag count, and the cost together, so replace the starting value with the figure for the material you are actually buying.

Suppliers also quote differently: some sell by the ton and some by the cubic yard, and a yard quoted loose is not a yard once it is placed and compacted. Check which unit your quote uses before ordering against these numbers.

Bulk density varies significantly by material and condition. For bulk delivery, supplier estimates may be more appropriate than bag calculations. This tool does not account for compaction, settlement, sub-base layers, irregular geometry, or vehicle and site load limits.

How does the calculator estimate gravel weight?

It multiplies geometric volume in cubic feet by the bulk density you enter in pounds per cubic foot. Density must come from the specific material or supplier.

Why can gravel density vary?

Rock type, particle size, grading, moisture, void space, and compaction all affect bulk density, so a generic value may differ from delivered material.

Are the tons short tons or metric tonnes?

The result uses US short tons of 2,000 pounds. It does not use metric tonnes or long tons.

Does the estimate include compaction or a base layer?

No. It estimates the entered rectangular layer before project-specific compaction, settlement, sub-base, edging, drainage, or delivery allowances.
