How to use the auto loan calculator
Enter the negotiated vehicle price, cash down payment, trade-in credit, local sales tax rate, financed fees, annual percentage rate, and term in months. The result separates the amount financed from interest and other purchase inputs.
Use figures from a written buyer’s order and lender quote when available. Advertised prices may exclude taxes and fees, while advertised rates may apply only to specific borrowers or loan terms.
Understanding the estimate
The calculator subtracts the trade-in and down payment, adds estimated sales tax and fees, and amortizes the remaining balance with equal monthly payments. It assumes the trade-in reduces the taxable price and that all entered fees are financed.
Tax and fee rules differ by location. Some jurisdictions tax the full price, treat rebates differently, or exclude particular fees from financing. Adjust the inputs to match the transaction documents rather than relying on a general convention.
Comparing vehicle loans
Compare offers using both the monthly payment and total interest. Extending the term can reduce the scheduled payment while increasing interest and the time the loan may exceed the vehicle’s market value.
Change one input at a time when evaluating a larger down payment, a different rate, or a shorter term. The estimate does not include the ongoing costs of owning the vehicle, such as insurance, maintenance, repairs, fuel, parking, or registration renewals.
Frequently asked questions
What does this auto loan calculator include?
The estimate includes vehicle price, trade-in value, down payment, sales tax, entered fees, principal, and interest. It does not include insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration renewals, or lender-specific products.
How does the calculator treat a trade-in for sales tax?
It assumes the trade-in reduces the taxable vehicle price. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction, and some locations do not allow this reduction, so confirm the taxable amount with the dealer or local tax authority.
Why can the purchase cost exceed the vehicle price?
The purchase cost includes entered fees, estimated sales tax, and interest paid over the loan term. A longer term or higher interest rate can increase total cost even when it lowers the monthly payment.
Is this result a financing offer?
No. This is an educational estimate based only on the values entered. Actual rates, taxes, fees, eligibility, and payment schedules depend on the lender, dealer, location, and transaction.
