How to resize a recipe

Enter the number of servings the original recipe makes and the number you want to make. Then enter each ingredient’s name, numeric amount, and optional unit. Empty ingredient rows are ignored.

The calculator applies one proportional scale factor to every ingredient. For example, changing a four-serving recipe to ten servings uses a factor of 2.5, so two cups become five cups.

What the calculator does not convert

Units are preserved exactly as entered. The calculator does not convert volume to weight because that conversion depends on the ingredient’s density. A cup of flour and a cup of water do not weigh the same amount.

Results are shown to three significant figures to keep the list readable, which is not the same as three decimal places. A small amount keeps its detail — 0.0012345 shows as 0.00123 — while a large one is rounded to the leading digits, so 1234.5678 shows as 1,230. Scaling a recipe to catering quantities therefore gives a rounded figure to weigh against, not an exact one. Values that are difficult to measure may need practical rounding with an appropriate kitchen scale or measuring tool.

Adjustments beyond ingredient quantity

Not every part of cooking scales proportionally. Pan dimensions affect food depth and heat transfer. Baking time, stovetop heat, mixing time, leavening, salt, spices, and thickening agents may need judgment rather than direct multiplication.

For food safety, follow a trusted recipe’s temperature guidance and verify doneness with an appropriate thermometer. Treat scaled quantities as a planning aid, not as a substitute for safe handling and cooking practices.

Frequently asked questions

How are the new ingredient amounts calculated?

The desired servings are divided by the original servings to get a scale factor. Every ingredient amount is multiplied by that same factor.

Does the calculator convert between measurement units?

No. It preserves the unit you enter and scales only the numeric amount. Converting cups to grams or other units requires ingredient-specific density information.

Should cooking time scale by the same factor?

Usually not. Cooking time depends on the food's shape and depth, the pan, appliance, temperature, and doneness target. Check the food as it cooks rather than multiplying the time automatically.

Why can scaled eggs or other items have awkward decimals?

Mathematical scaling can produce impractical portions of indivisible ingredients. You may need to round, weigh the ingredient, or adjust the batch size while considering how the change affects the recipe.
